A Book For Kids And Their Parents "What Is Leukaemia?"

Independent Media Sanoma Magazines has republished a book for the parents of the kids suffering from leukaemia. The book was originally written in German. It was composed by Bernhard Kremens together with the medical staff of the Department of Haematology and Oncology of the Munich University Pedagogical Clinic. The book will be distributed by the "Give a Life" charity fund in the departments of children's haematology in special medical centres of Moscow and the regions of Russia. The circulation is 5 000 copies.

Many years have passed from the first publication of this book. Lots of things have changed in Russia during this period, and the departments of children's haematology and corresponding clinics can be found now in many regional centres of the country. With the help of the federal program for children with oncological diseases these, medical centres are being supplied with modern equipment and medication. Some clinics have all the tools for transplantation of the marrow. All such centres cooperate with each other, share their experience and use similar therapy protocols. There is no need now to take a kid with leucosis to Moscow - appropriate medical support is finally available in the regions.

But equipment and medication is not enough. The success of therapy also depends on the appropriate childcare and the parental understanding of the treatment process. There is no alternative to donor blood so far, so the leucosis treatment cannot do without the transfusion of blood components. Only the synchronised activity of doctors, governmental and non-commercial organisations, funds, parents and families can beat the disease.

The book was republished in partnership with the "Give a Life" fund, with whom Independent Media Sanoma Magazines began to work in 2007. The fund, established by the actresses Chulpan Khamatova and Dina Korzun includes the volunteer group "Donors for Children". It helps children suffering from oncological diseases, and their parents.
